How we research, test, and correct our work

Last reviewed:

This site publishes two kinds of information: practical instructions for working with image files, and measurements produced by the tools themselves. Both should be checkable. This page explains who is responsible for the content, what counts as a source, how a measurement is made, and what happens when something is wrong.

Who writes and reviews the site

Feng Yuqing, the independent developer who builds and maintains heictojpg.click, reviews every guide and every tool page. You can inspect the public project history on GitHub . The site does not accept sponsored articles, paid rankings, or product placement.

How a guide is researched

  1. Start with the primary source: Apple, Microsoft, Android, a government passport authority, or the specification owner rather than a search-result summary.
  2. Separate an operating-system capability from an app capability. A format supported by an OS can still be rejected by a browser upload control, editor, or older app.
  3. Reproduce the workflow where the required device or browser is available. When a step comes only from official documentation, the article says so instead of presenting it as a personal test.
  4. Link the primary documents at the end of the article and show the date they were last checked. Sources are evidence, not padding: a link is included only when it supports a claim made on the page.

How converter measurements work

File-size charts are generated from a fixed source image run through the same WebAssembly encoders used by the live tools. A chart records the source dimensions, encoder, quality setting, and resulting bytes. It is an example, not a promise: two photographs with the same dimensions can compress very differently because texture, noise, and detail differ.

Privacy claims are tested differently. The converters have no upload API, and conversion continues after the page has loaded and the network is disconnected. Anyone can verify this by opening the browser network panel, adding a file, and checking that no request contains that file. The original always remains unchanged on the user's device.

Passport and ID photo data

Each country entry stores an official issuing-authority URL and one authoritative set of dimensions. Inches and 300-DPI pixel values are calculated from that source value rather than copied independently. Government requirements change, so every page tells readers to confirm the current background, head-size, file-format, and upload-limit rules on the application they are actually submitting.

Updates and corrections

A review date changes only after the instructions and linked sources have been checked. We do not refresh dates simply to make an old article look new. Material corrections are made in the page and its source data, so tables, diagrams, and related pages stay consistent.
